On September 12th in Dublin, the International Union of Lawyers (UIA) announced the creation of the Institute for the Rule of Law. This institute aims to coordinate and strengthen UIA’s activities in defending Human Rights, the Rule of Law, and the free practice of the legal profession. The institute will oversee UIA’s efforts to defend these core principles, including the independence and protection of lawyers’ professional secrecy.
Miguel Loinaz, UIA’s president, stated that current challenges to legal practice require a robust response, especially when fundamental principles like professional secrecy are threatened. The establishment of this institute will enable UIA to consolidate and expand its advocacy actions globally.
The Institute for the Rule of Law will encompass the roles of Human Rights, Defense of Defense, Rule of Law, and independence of the profession. The general director will be Pascual Maurer, with a team of directors including Carlos Fatás Mosquera, Jacqueline Scott, among other distinguished professionals, with lawyer Ángela Díaz-Bastien serving as deputy director.
